Drive-In Movie!

I think we all finally recovered after the busy, but enjoyable, weekend of our family visit.

We took last weekend off from everything and basically laid around and relaxed.  This weekend, we were ready to do something fun.  I discovered that there is a drive-in movie in Hermosa, SD.  It's about a 25 minute drive south of Rapid City.

The movie starts at dusk, which turned out to be about 9:30 pm. This is wayyyy past the boys' bedtime, but we decided to be rebellious and go anyway!  (We gave them a bath and put them in their pj's before leaving.) We watched Despicable Me 2.  Jameson fell asleep about 1/2 way through, but Hendrix watched the whole thing. It was a really cute movie!

We took snacks and drinks with us.  I made 2 gallon-size Ziploc bags of popcorn, took sugar free juice for the boys, took a big chocolate bar, and some gummy bears.  Perfect! Admission was $8 each for Matt and I, and the boys were free, so the whole family got to see the movie for $16.  One person could barely get into a theatre for that price, let alone the cost of popcorn and pop!

An attempt at a group shot of all four of us, huddled in the back of the Escape. :)

Such a good movie!

It was a really fun experience, and I fully plan on going again before the season is over!

Run or Dye

I'm sure you have heard about The Color Run.  Lots of knock-offs of that race/run have been surfacing, and one of them finally made it to Rapid City!

I ran Run or Dye on Saturday morning.  It was fun, but I probably wouldnt pay $45 to run a race like that again.  Mostly because I'm cheap. :)  But also because it was way more about  the "party" than it was about the run.  That's perfect for a lot of people.  But I got pretty bored with standing at the start line watching prizes being thrown into the crowd.  I wanted to run! Also, I didn't have my GPS watch for fear of the dye dust ruining it, but I know that the race was not 3.1 miles.  I'd say it was about 2.25 miles.

But regardless, it was an enjoyable experience overall, and I'm glad I had the opportunity.  Here are a few pictures from the run.

I apologize for the terrible quality of this photo, but I had to snap a picture.  Only in South Dakota does a run take you inside through a horse barn.....

I had dye dust in so many places.....

Fitness 2013: July 21-27 (A Short Novel)

It's hard to get over "the number" on the scale.  I'm not a big soapbox preacher about how society is making our girls and women feel fat and hate themselves.  However, I'm just like a lot of other women in this country/world that want to be thin, because thin is associated with beautiful, generally speaking.

I've been at a weight plateau for about a year now.  I'm happy with my weight, I feel good in my body, but I'm finally at a place where I'm ready to start building muscle, toning up, and reducing my body fat percentage (bf%).  The bf% thing is the number that's more important to me now, more so than my weight.  I've been guzzling a gallon of water a day and eating as much lean protein as I can.  But it's time to get to work. :)

I'm trying to cost-justify a gym membership.  We have a little fitness center at our apartment complex, but it has 1 treadmill, 1 elliptical, 1 bike, and a resistance weight machine (that I'm not in love with).  To be honest, it gets the job done of keeping one healthy.  I appreciate it, I really do.  However, for the goals that I hope to accomplish in the next six months, I feel like I need more.

I've seen these women who are so fit, toned, and healthy, and they have inspired me to set new goals, and I'm really determined.  So, I signed up for a 14-day trial membership to Anytime Fitness yesterday.  It's only an 8 minute drive from our apartment complex, and it's a nice, complete, clean, and modern gym with all the weights and things I'm interested in using.

I hope that in the next two weeks, I can really get a good idea and a true picture of whether or not it will get me where I want to me.  For a 12-month commitment, it's $35 a month, and for an 18-month commitment, it's $31 a month.  Really, quite inexpensive.  Especially if you compare it to these crossfit gyms, which I've heard run about $100 a month for unlimited classes.  (I'd love to do crossfit, but definitely can't fit that in the budget!)

So I'm going to be kicking my booty hard for the next two weeks, and we'll see where I stand on whether or not it's worth $420 over the next year.

In other exciting fitness news (sorry, I'm a health and fitness nut, I get excited about this stuff!) - I joined a facebook group of moms here in Rapid City that are trying to be, or already are, dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle.  We met at a track Wednesday evening for a group run.  I'm really looking forward to getting to know some of these women and making friends.  Not just friends, but friends who: 1) have kids and 2) are into health and fitness like me.  Hopefully more to come on this!

Now, after my novel - here's what when down this week!

Sunday 7/21 - REST

Monday 7/22 - 3.65 miles

Tuesday 7/23 - 30 minutes elliptical + arms/shoulders circuit @ Anytime Fitness (AF)

Friday 7/26 - 30 minutes elliptical + ab and core work

Saturday 7/27 - 2.25 miles - Run or Dye!

Miles for the week: 11.5
Miles for July: 44.31
Miles for 2013: 293.11

Family Visit!

Well, as you all know, my family came to visit us for a long weekend!  We really enjoyed ourselves and it was so great to be able to spend time with them.

I was in Sioux Falls for a business trip Wednesday afternoon through Friday afternoon.  The logistics of my family's travel worked out perfectly and they were heading through Sioux Falls just as our meeting ended, so I actually jumped in the van and rode back to Rapid with them! We dropped Matt's mom off at an exit where her brother and father met her and took her up north for the next 36-ish hours.

We arrived around 7 pm and the boys were just so excited to see Granny, Grandfather, Gigi, Aunt Charissa, Uncle Travis, and Rylee!  Sarah (my cousin), Tim, and their daughter Mikaela also arrived that evening around 7:30.

We played on the swings for a little bit with the kids, then my parents and sister's family went to their cabin to get settled.  The Cissels (Sarah, Tim, Mikaela) stuck around and we enjoyed a bit of wine together.

Saturday morning, we started out with a breakfast buffet at the Golden Corral.  It was delicious, and I'm pretty sure I consumed about 2 days worth of normal calorie intake in that one meal.  Afterwards, we did Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore.

Saturday afternoon, we relaxed at our apartment for a while, cooked burgers and dogs, then went to the campground where my family was staying and just hung out.  We had planned to swim in the lake, but there turned out to be no beach as we had planned.  The kids played on the swing-set, and I just enjoyed being in the company of my loved ones!

Sunday morning, I got up early and got a 5k run in.  I needed it!  Then, I cooked breakfast.  I made 2 breakfast casseroles and we had bagels with cream cheese, fresh fruit, and muffins.  It was quite a spread and so tasty!

After breakfast, Matt headed to Pierre to pick up his mom and the Cissels headed back south to Colorado Springs and the rest of us decided to check out Reptile Gardens.  We had been there, but were eager to go again, because it was so cool!  Once again, it did not disappoint.

Not sure if you can see it or not, but there is a section of this snake - right in the middle - that is rounder than the rest.  He had obviously recently eaten.  Crazy!

Reptile Gardens.

Petting the giant turtle.  Didn't get a picture of it, but only my crazy son would put his cheek on the turtle's dirty shell and love on it like it's his blankey.  Hahaha.  He was a stitch.

Sunday afternoon, my Aunt Julie (dad's sister) and her husband Larry arrived from southern Arizona.  We sat and chatted with them for a while.  We rarely get to see them so it was a real treat!

Sunday evening, everyone minus Matt, myself, my sister, and Travis, headed off to dinner at Applebee's, and the remaining 4 of us went out to eat at Sanford's here in Rapid.  This place is so cool, and their food is great!  Matt was a responsible gentleman and enjoyed his coke so that the rest of us could enjoy an adult beverage.  I was able to try Fat Tire beer, which is a local brew that I've been wanting to try for a while.  It tastes similar to the Moose Drool that we love so much, but is lighter and less hoppy.  Good stuff.

Reptile Gardens.

We woke up Monday morning with no particular plans, though we decided to go to Bear Country in the morning.  Believe me - you won't leave that place without seeing some serious bear-age!  There were so many of them, and they were all so cute!

After Bear Country and a light lunch at our apartment, myself, Charissa, Rylee, Travis, and Hendrix went to Rushmore Water Slide Park.  It was TONS of fun!  Two of the big twisty slides allow double riders so I got to take Hendrix down with me.  He just had a ball and seeing his cheesy grin and hearing his contagious giggles meant more to me than anything!

Monday evening, we all had dinner at Pizza Ranch.  Matt took Jameson home and spent time with his mom while I went back to my aunt and uncle's hotel with them, Rylee, Charissa, and Travis and Hendrix.  Rylee, Hendrix, Uncle Larry, and Charissa swam and Travis, aunt Julie, and I sat and visited.

Tuesday morning, everyone headed back east.  Everyone was pretty darn exhausted, but of course, not ready to say goodbye.  Some tears were shed, but that was to be expected.  It was so awesome being able to spend 3 whole days with my family.  We are already saving spare change and doing all we can to set up a nice fund for our travels home for the holidays!

Fitness 2013: July 7-13 and July 14-20

I've been a bit absent from the blog lately, and for that I apologize.  I spent the end of June and the first week of July preparing for my family's visit to Rapid City, then they were here and I spent every minute that I could enjoying their company!

My workout routine suffered a bit while they were here, as I expected it to.  I'm really focusing on getting things back on track and I'm hoping to make some serious progress on my body before we head home for a visit during the holidays.

D-Talk: Pink Eye

About a month and a half ago, a simple ear infection put Jamers in the hospital, in dka.

For the past week, we'd been noticing that he was running higher than normal, but kept an eye on things, and all was ok.

Monday morning, he woke up with really goopy eyes, and had two super loose diapers.  I thought he had another ear infection, because those tend to "ooze" out his eyes when he has them.  Lovely, I know.

Anyway, I took him to daycare with the intention of starting ear drops that evening.  Daycare called me at lunch and his bg reading was over 600. (I think I may have cursed to the daycare director....oopsie!)

Based on the ooziness and week-long sugar readings that were a bit higher than normal, I first called the pediatrician and got him in at 1 pm.  He was diagnosed with pink eye and given eye drops.

Then, I called the endocrinologist to make sure we didn't need to do anything differently.  I was NOT having him back in the hospital if I could at all help it!  She confirmed what we were already doing - keeping an eye on bg readings as well as checking for ketones.  She told us to push the fluids, and check him around the clock, which we did on Tuesday night.

Fortunately we got his bg back under control.  He was 124 at bedtime.  He shot up to around 300 at 1 am, but he tends to do this every night.  I treated him at 1 am and he was back down to 159 at breakfast.  We have adjusted his basal rate at different times throughout the day, and will look at insulin-to-carb ratio when the diabetic educator returns to the office on Wednesday.

It's crazy, really.  My recurring thought all day during this latest D-episode was, "A simple bout of pink eye should NOT have a momma worrying that her baby is going to end up in the hospital with dka."

We need a cure for T1D, people!!!!

The following pictures look really bad, but the truth is that Jameson was just super exhausted and grouchy, because Matt had to wake him up in the middle of his nap at daycare to take him to the doc.

This is my little plug:

If you have the opportunity to donate to a JDRF chapter, consider it.  There is not a local chapter where we live, and that upsets me greatly.  However, the northwest Ohio chapter is holding a walk this fall, and the boys' old daycare is walking in it and raising funds for it.  I'll definitely be donating.  Finding a cure for any disease obviously takes funding.  If you have even just a dollar or two that you can part with, consider donating to this great cause!

Ok, end plug.

Have a great day, friends!

Fitness 2013: June 30 - July 6

I'm riding the struggle bus.  I'm a passenger on the burn-out wagon.

I'm still working out 6 days each week, but it's been a struggle.  I want to cry when the alarm goes off.  I'm having to give myself pep talks as I walk to the fitness center each morning.

I'm digging deep, and scouring healthy-living websites in order to find that burst of motivation that I need again!

My eating habits have also been deplorable this past week.  This may be TMI, but I'll share it anyway.  The birth control that I'm on has stopped my cycle.  But I'm convinced it hasn't stopped my hormones!  I still have weeks where I'm grouchy, sluggish, bloated, and can't resist food.  This has been one of those weeks.  Ugh.

I hate the sluggish, guilty, blah feeling I get after eating something I shouldn't.  Especially THIS week, which has been my bikini time frame goal for about 6 months.  My family is coming in on Friday and we'll spend a good portion of the weekend at the pool.  Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to have an awesome time.  I just wish it was easier to resist the sweets!  Being a woman is rough stuff some days.....

Anywayyyyyyy...... here's how I finished out the first week of July.  Help motivate me, friends!

Personal Challenge: June Recap and July Challenge

Is this summer getting away from anyone else?  I blinked, and it was my baby's birthday.  I blinked again and we're already 5 days into July!!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable 4th of July with their families and friends.  I didn't get to spend the holiday with my family, BUT I do get to see them one week from today!!!!!!!

Ok so!  If you remember, my personal challenge for June was to clean and re-organize my entire apartment.  The verdict?

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.  Boom!

Matt and I's bedroom
Boys' Bedroom

Boys' Closet
Small Bathroom
Large Bathroom
Linen/Toiletries Closet
Living Room
Craft Area
Kitchen
Dining Area
Laundry Room
Patio

It took me the whole month, but I managed to re-organize the entire apartment.  We have done a pretty decent job of keeping it in order, too!

Now that the re-org is done, I'm going to spend this weekend doing last minute cleaning, since I'm going to be out of town the 2nd half of next week for a work meeting, and will get back home pretty much the same time as my family gets in.

Weekend plans include: finishing the hems and hanging the shower curtain I made (more to come there, don't worry!), vacuuming all the rooms, sweeping/mopping the floor, dusting, picking up last minute clutter, scrubbing the dining table (NOTE: do NOT buy a glass-top dining table if you have or plan to have children.), and scouring both bathrooms.  It'll be a busy weekend, but I've never been more excited to clean, due to the reason I'm doing it this time.  Whoop!!

So what's next, now that July is barreling right by?  So far this month, I've been trying to work on putting down the cell phone.  We live in a technologically advanced world, people, and I love it.  I'm not going to lie.  I love having a world of information at my fingertips at all times.  However, I feel like I'm at a place where I need to put the phone down and focus on the real world, and what's happening around me.  I have stopped texting and driving, which I think is incredibly important.  I've started leaving my phone in my purse when I get home at night, and letting myself get it out once the boys are in bed.  They really do deserve all of my attention.  They didn't choose to be my kids, I chose to be their mom.  They deserve all of me.  <3

I'm also working on putting better nutrition into my body this month.  I've gotten back onto a path of sugar and junk.  I definitely don't eat that stuff in excess, but I could surely benefit by reducing the amount of it that I eat.

SO........to recap, in the month of July - I am going to spend less time with my face in my phone/social media, and I am going to work on eating better.

3 egg-white omelet with cherries, grapes, and strawberries.  Delish!

Leftover turkey burger from the 4th (and 1/2 a hot dog) with cooked broccoli for lunch at work on Friday. Yeah, I used two forks.  I'm way too cool for one fork.  Hahaha!

I've been giving this a lot of thought lately......

How do you plan to challenge yourself this month?

Did you issue yourself a challenge in June?  How did you do?

Fitness 2013: Week of June 23-29

Relaxing Weekend around Rapid City

Is anyone else crazy, ridiculously busy?  Yikes!  Sorry for the delay in this post.

This past weekend consisted of a lot of rest and relaxation and play time! (Which was good, seeing how this work week has been the opposite.)

I started off our Saturday by burning hellacious calories!

It was a really nice day Saturday, so we decided to go to Dinosaur Park.

DP makes for some cool photo ops, but it's really not that exciting.  We spent about 45 minutes there, then decided to head to another regular playground-type park after that.

We decided to log a geochache while we were there.  It was a sneaky one!

Saturday evening, we decided to step out of our culinary comfort zone and try to grill some fish. We aren't big fish eaters, but our taste buds have changed a lot in the last few years, and we know how healthy it is for you, so we gave it a whirl.

We grilled salmon filets and the asparagus.  The pasta is just whole wheat penne with garlic and butter.

We loved it!

Sunday was more relaxation.  Matt ran to the grocery store for something, and I asked him to pick me up a bottle of wine.  This is what he brought me.  Love it!

Sunday afternoon, a very rare thing happened.

Hendrix was whiny and basically obnoxious all morning long.  Normally we let him watch TV while Jameson naps, but with his deplorable attitude, we were over it.  I told him that he didn't have to sleep, but that he was going to lay down and have quiet time, and I didn't let him argue with me about it.

Well, obviously he was tired. Aren't they just so handsome??

Sunday evening, we just played and we made a countdown calendar to July 12th, when my family and Matt's mom come to visit us.  We just cannot wait!!!

Overall, it was a very relaxing weekend.  How was yours?
