c25k - Week 1 complete!

I completed Week 1 of the c25k program last evening!!! It had been about 5 days between my runs, because it's been miserably hot and humid here - heat advisories, and heat indexes over 100 degrees for the past week.

Week 1 had 3 days of workouts, that were all the same. After a 5 minute warm-up, I alternated 60 seconds of jogging with 90 seconds of walking, for 20 minutes, then finished with a 3 minute cool down.

I'm ready to step it up a bit during week 2 and progress on my quest to run a 5k! Plus, I'm ready to burn more calories and lose these last few pounds! :)

Bring it, week 2!!!!!

Rough week...

This past week has not been an easy one. We've spent the last 5 days listening to Jameson scream and cry inconsolably. I took him for his 1 month check up today, and he has been diagnosed with colic. Dr. Toni had me switch his formula to Enfamil Nutramigen. I just gave him his 1st bottle of the new formula, so I'm really hopeful that it helps. She said it helps 80% of babies who have colic.

So far, today has been really great though. He hasn't cried in about an hour and a half, and right now he's laying on the floor kicking and even doing a bit of cooing. I'm really enjoying it!!! I just wish I could get a smile out of him, but I know I will eventually.

I'll keep you updated on the progress with this new formula.

Baby Wise - Day 1

So in my frustration from lack of sleep, I'm trying to find ways to get this little newborn of mine to sleep better at night. I'd heard good things about the book "On Becoming Baby Wise." The main theme to remember in this sleep strategy is "Eat time, wake time, and sleep time," and it's important to remember those in that order.

The key is getting your baby on a 2 and 1/2 to 4 hour (depending on age and whether or not it's breastfed) schedule of eating, being awake, then sleeping. Right now (1:30 pm) we're in the wake stage of our second phase. He's a bit fussy, but gets frustrated when the pacifier falls out of his mouth, but I'm not rushing to put it back in every time.....

He has been pretty bad about just snacking when we feed him, and only taking 1-2 ounces at a time. So for the past 3 days, I've been working on getting him to go longer between feedings, and today is the first day I've really applied BabyWise. Keeping him awake after feedings is a challenge as well, but so far, so good. I'm hoping his sleep starts to improve in the next few weeks, because I'm seriously exhausted and at my wits end!!!

I'll keep you posted on our progress!

Back to work in a few weeks...

I got the schedule I wanted for when I go back to work - I'm so excited! I had originally planned on working 5-10 pm M-F, but had a lot of reservations about being away from home 5 nights a week. It was bothering me pretty badly. So I decided I'd see if I would be able to work 5-11 PM Mon-Thurs. They approved it!! Woo hoo!!!

Working a 6 hour shift, I'd have to take a lunch or only work 5.5 hours, so I decided to work the 5.5 to get out of there a bit earlier each evening. Since I'll have Fridays off, I decided to go back to work two weeks earlier than I had planned. So, starting Monday, August 22nd, I'll be working 5PM-10:30PM Monday thru Thursday. I'm excited!

BIG NEWS!

Ok, this may not be big news to the rest of the world, but its huge to this set of parents: Hendrix went peepee in the potty!!!!!!!!!

We got him a potty last weekend, after he has been showing a bit of interest in "going." He sat on his potty various times, but hasn't done anything. Well, Saturday evening, he sat there, and after my usual prompting (Go peepee in the potty Hendrix, and mommy will get you a treat!), he actually went!!! We made a very big deal out of it, clapped and praised him, and immediately went and got him a DumDum sucker (at 7:40 at night - this is obviously a big deal - sugar that late is unheard of!). We sat him on the potty again this morning, and he went again! So I gave him a bit of cookie (didn't have any more suckers).

Those 2 times are the only 2 times so far, but I'm very encouraged!! We got a pack of Smarties today while at the store to use as bribes. :) Wish us luck for more success!!!

Hendrix's very own potty!

His bribe for using his potty.

Just had to throw this one in there.......LOL!

The MILF-quest has begun!

Ok, if you don't know what MILF stands for, I will not explain it. :)

Anyway, if you've been following my blog for any amount of time, you know all through my pregnancy with Jameson, I've been going on and on about how I can't wait to get back into the work-out routine and get back in shape. Well, I started last night!!!

I've been wanting to do the "Couch to 5k" running program for a while, and I did the first day of that program last evening, after Hendrix went to bed. The idea behind the program is to go from couch (no physical activity) to running 3.1 miles (5k) or 30 minutes straight in 9 weeks. I haven't worked out in about 4 months, so I thought this would be a good way for me to ease back into things. The website advises against pushing yourself harder than the program recommends so that you don't get burnt out. So I'm going to follow the program just as it states to and hopefully it will be very successful for me!

Last night's workout: brisk 5 minute warm up walk, then alternating 60 seconds of jogging with 90 seconds of walking for 20 minutes, then a 3 minute cool down. I had no problem last evening keeping up this pace. Grand Rapids is such a cute and quaint little town, and I enjoyed seeing some of it that I don't usually see in my everyday driving. For now, I'm going to get out and do my exercising after Hendrix goes to bed. I'm not sure when I'll squeeze it in once I go back to work, but I'll find a way to do it, I'm determined. I'm very happy with the way I look right now, 3 weeks post-partum with my second child, but I just want to work on toning and trimming, and achieve that MILF status I've been coveting for so long!!! :)

I'll keep you posted on my progress!!!

Jameson is 3 weeks old!

Sometimes its hard to believe that three weeks have passed since Jameson was born, and sometimes it feels like its been many months! Oh, the newborn stage is so difficult.

Jameson is NOT sleeping well at all. I can usually get one stretch of sleep out of him - sometimes 2 hours, sometimes 3 if I'm really lucky - and then he gets up hourly - sometimes more - for the rest of the night. I'm so exhausted. I told Matt that since he's working and I'm not, that he doesn't have to help with the night feedings during the week. I'm now regretting telling him that! I'm sooooo tired and not sure I can continue to do this on my own.

Hendrix has 2 more weeks at daycare, then I'll have him here with me as well. I'll certainly need Matt's help once that takes place. I got him into a daycare center part time (2 days a week) here in Grand Rapids, because I think he needs that element of socialization. But he'll still be here at home with me 3 days. I want to have lots of things planned so he doesn't get bored, but it will be quite difficult with a tiny baby. I hate to wish time away, but I do want Jameson to be about 3-4 months old already. hahaha.

Other than the sleeping thing (or lack of sleeping) things are going well. Hendrix had a good night last night with being gentle to brother. I even let him hold him for a few seconds, as you'll see in the picture below. Jameson still isn't smiling, but he's only 3 weeks today. I don't expect any smiles for a few weeks yet. I remember from Hendrix how rewarding that 1st smile is though! I'm so looking forward to it. Jameson tends to get gas a lot, but we use Mylicon and it seems to help. We're getting through it, day by day. And I know that things will only continue to improve. I've always said the 1-month mark is where it is the most difficult, and we're not even there for another week yet. We'll make it. Things will be getting easier before we know it.

Jameson checking out his surroundings - relaxing in the boppy pillow.

Hendrix got to hold his little brother for the 1st time - he was so proud!! (Jameson looks eerily like me as a baby in this picture - even though its fuzzy!)

Our Weekend (July 9-10)

Is it bad that, now that I'm on maternity leave, I look forward to the weekdays more than the weekends? :o) Don't get me wrong, I love my Hendrix more than anything, but that boy is just BUSY!!! There's just no rest with him around on the weekends. I'm going to be pulling him from daycare in less than a month so I'm trying to enjoy my restful opportunities as they come right now. Jameson is not doing so well with the whole sleeping-at-night thing. I'm very lucky to get a 3-hour stretch out of him. He hasn't slept for 3 solid hours for the past 2 nights. I'm tired to say the least!

Other than that, we're doing well. This weekend was kind of chaotic. Matt called me at 9:15 Friday morning and asked if I was ready to get crazy. Larry, Joyce, Jon, Rachael, and Gracie came over Friday night and stayed the night. We had breakfast and lunch Saturday, then they headed back to Indiana. It was enjoyable, and exhausting at the same time. So glad they made it over though!! Saturday evening, we went into Bowling Green to get Hendrix a haircut. He got a buzz cut and it's just so cute!!! We also went to WalMart and got him his very own potty chair. He's pretty young for potty training, and we're aware of that, but he is showing signs of readiness, so we're introducing it to him, not going to push the issue too hard, and just see what happens. He'll sit on the potty, but won't do anything. I think that's probably normal with kids.

This morning, we went to church, came home and napped. Now Matt and hendrix are playing outside, while I'm inside with Jameson. It's so hot out, we fear Jameson overheating, so we don't take him outside other than for walks. I'm sure we'll go on a walk later this evening, when it cools down a bit. It's only mid-July and I'm already ready for cool fall weather. I've got a couple months of scorchers left, I think. Eww.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Bring on week 3 of maternity leave!

First Day of "Just us Two"

While I love my husband and Hendrix with all my heart, I'm not going to lie - I was quite looking forward to having them both out of the house today! :o)

Hendrix is continuing to go to daycare, for about 4 and 1/2 more weeks so that I can get some rest and bond with Jameson. Matt has been taking him in the mornings. Jameson and I have spent the day chilling out and resting. I got the dishes done, folded a couple loads of laundry, and am about to attack the toy-splosion that has taken over our family room. With it being summer and us spending so much time outside, Hendrix hardly plays with his toys at all. When we are inside, he enjoys tinkering with things that aren't toys anyway, so I'm going to go through all his toys downstairs, and put some of them in his bedroom, and store others. Hopefully we can restore some kind of balance to the living room downstairs!!

Jameson is doing well. He is sleeping about 2-3 hours at a time. It's hard to be up several times during the night, of course, but I can definitely say that feeding him has been such a different and better experience that it was with Hendrix, due to not breastfeeding. I surely feel like a slave to my breast pump, but it doesn't hurt me to pump like it does to actually have the baby nurse, and Jameson is still getting my breast milk. I figure that if I can only continue the pumping for a month or so, its better than nothing at all. I'm happy with it. :)

I think Jameson may have a clogged tear duct. I noticed some "eye boogers" (as i call them) in his right eye yesterday, and it continued through the night. This morning it was worse, so I of course googled it as much as I could. From what I read, I think it's a clogged tear duct. The goop is white, and I don't think there's reason to be concerned as long as it doesn't turn yellow or green. From what I read, if I did take him to the doctor, there isn't a whole lot that can be done. I've been washing it with a warm washcloth, and I've read that massaging the inner eye can help as well, so I'll do that, and as long as it doesn't get any worse, I'll address it with the doctor at his next appointment in 2 and 1/2 weeks.

We had a fairly good weekend with Hendrix. He's amazing us every day with his language. I was going over all of our names the other evening, and he looked at me and said "Mommy's name Stephanie." Wow! I think its important for young children to know their parents names, their address, phone number, etc, so I'm starting to work on that. He's just such a smarty.

Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday!!

4th of July Weekend

Happy 4th of July weekend! Hard to believe this year is 1/2 over already - wow!

We've had a relaxing weekend so far. Yesterday, we ran a couple of errands, and had a family movie evening in the living room, because it is so hot outside. The heat index is over 100 degrees this weekend, and its miserable. Today, we went to church and now we're hanging out at home. Matt and Hendrix have been playing outside, but are taking a lot of breaks, because its so hot.

We don't have any plans for tomorrow, the 4th. We thought about going up to Perrysburg to Fort Meigs, but aren't sure. It depends on the temperature.

We're adjusting nicely to being a family of four. Jameson has been sleeping for about 3 hours at a time at night. I have no complaints about that, I don't remember Hendrix sleeping for that long at such a young age. It helps that we're bottle feeding him and I'm not in agony every time he's hungry, due to breast feeding. I am pumping, so he's still getting some breast milk, so that's good. We went to his 1 week doctor appointment on Friday. He weighs 7 lbs 15 oz (was 7 lbs 9 oz when we left the hospital), so weight gain is good. He hasn't gained any length yet, but I'm sure he will in the next few weeks.

Hendrix is handling being a big brother pretty well. He's showing a bit of jealousy, but that was to be expected. Despite the tantrums, he's being a great brother. We try to involve him in as much as possible, and have him help us "fetch" things we need, such a diapers, paci's, bottles, etc. The one thing he's not so good at right now is being gentle. We're working on it though. :)

Hendrix is just talking up a storm! He speaks in complete sentences and you can actually hold simple conversations with him. It's so cool! He's just way too big!!

Here's a picture of Jameson I just took a few minutes ago - he's 9 days old here. This past week has flown. I'm trying to cherish the moments, because I know they'll fly.

Have a safe and happy holiday, everyone!
